Surprised and very excited to hear that some friends were coming to visit, we just couldn’t wait for our weekend with friends to begin.
That weekend arrived and now has passed, but the time spent with them was memorable. We’re really happy that they decided to drive the thirty plus minutes off the freeway to camp with us at our current camp host gig in Northern California.
Just Chill ‘in
Friday and Saturday night we had a simple but filling homemade meal. Really it wasn’t about the food but rather the food bringing us together.
We passed hours talking while overlooking the Klamath River. As night came on the stars came out more and more and became brighter and brighter. The night stars are always a highlight of camping because it means your out of the city. Which also means you can take a deep breath from busy city life. So as we sat there, we were able to relax, enjoy the moment, and we had fun catching up.
But really with good friends, do you ever feel like your really catching up? Or is it just picking up where you left off?
Since starting this camp host job and camping for two months, this is the first time I have felt like I was out on a camping vacation. Not like I need a vacation though, this place has been very pleasant for us. I’m just trying to say that we were able to relax that much more and really enjoyed our weekend with friends.
Saturday and Sunday morning we had delicious cinnamon swirl pancakes made by Tyler. They were so good! They were also pretty filling, and I’m pretty sure we all skipped lunch. Either that or being in the cool water of the Klamath River was just that refreshing we didn’t want to get out.
Rafting with new friends
As Sunday afternoon was arriving we had to say our goodbyes. They were continuing north and we had plans to raft down the river for the first time. This weekend was exciting; faithful friends, rafting for the first time, and making new friends all at the same time.
One of the bonuses of our camp host job has been meeting the family that owns and runs this place. And to our surprise one of the daughters offered to take us rafting with her one day.
The experience did not disappoint. First off, Hannah the daughter that took us, is so nice and personable, it feels like we have known her for a while. I am so thankful she wanted to spend so much of her Sunday with us. Her daughter, who also came, is so cute and giggly and made the outing that much better.
We launched the raft a little more than five miles up the river, and it took us just over two hours to make our way back to camp. Over those two hours we had such a good time!
Hannah started off rowing and showed us a thing or two about how to do it. Then she trusted us, and had us try it. Eeks, she was brave doing that. She made it look so much easier than what it actually was. Or maybe Jason and I were just uncoordinated with oars. LOL.
We were both saying to each other that at one moment we felt fine and in control, but then as the speed of the water picked up, we realized we actually weren’t in control at all! That we had no idea what to do to steer!
Not to worry though. It was supper fun and the part of the Klamath we were on was actually quite calm in comparison to the other parts of it. Also the raft we had was quite sturdy for the job.
If I remember correctly Hannah never ran us into bushes along the side of the river. While Jason and I definitely managed to make people take cover as we smashed them up and into branches. I think, one time, I even managed to beach us on the only low spot of the river.
The whole adventure was so much fun. We all really enjoyed the day and want to do it again.
We hope to have more weekends with friends while out on our travels and extend an invite to join us at any point for any length of time.
